I had the absolute thrill of being surrounded by dozens of Utah ASL teachers at their summer professional learning conference. The energy, expertise, creativity, and genuine commitment to students in that room were incredible.

As President of the Utah Foreign Language Association, I am continually reminded that our language educators are doing far more than teaching a language. They are creating opportunities for students to communicate, connect, and demonstrate what they can actually do.

And in my new role with Language Testing International, I find myself looking at assessment through an even deeper educator lens.

Best-practice assessment isn't just about a score.

The best assessments give students an opportunity to show what they can actually do—not simply what they can remember. They give teachers meaningful information. They help programs demonstrate impact. They can validate learning, inform teaching, motivate students, and open doors.

That matters deeply to me because I have spent my career watching what happens when students realize, “I can actually do this.”

Utah ASL teachers, thank you for letting me be a small part of your day. Your commitment to students is inspiring.

2026 Family Vacation in Mexico: Day 5

Our final day at the resort!
Dave arose early to reserve cabanas for the family at the beach. He loved being there alone and enjoying the serenity of solace and quiet.
We ate breakfast together as a family and then spent time swimming and laying out. When I went to the bar to grab pina coladas, a lady stopped to tell me that her group had been watching our family all week and thought we are all beautiful and a close family. It was one of the most lovely compliments I have ever heard about our family.

We moved from the beach to the pool, to an area that Taylor discovered, away from the pool volleyball games...and adult area. We were in LOVE! 5 hottubs bubbling from the pool, just magical!

We dressed up for dinner for our final night and ate at the steakhouse, followed by a Michael Jackson show.

Since we had to leave at 4:30am for the airport, we called it a night right at the end of the show.

What a trip!
