HALLOWEEN 2010
Halloween brings many traditions, some of which have existed years and others are new and "improved" from our past. The past two days have been whirlwinds of costumes, food, wigs and parties for our family. Yes, and trick-or-treating too.
On Friday, students at the high school and junior high where I teach, dressed up for the day. In my German 3 class at the junior high, we created little "horror skits" in German. Two of my students made certain to honor my fear of birds in their skit:
Austin and Alyssa had a great time at Julie and Aunt T's house during the morning. They had their Halloween party with art, crafts, dinner-in-a-pumpkin and a cool, cute Halloween craft. Here they are:
The Annual Lindsay Halloween Party
A fun celebration for neighbors and family
A fun celebration for neighbors and family
Halloween was never Dave and my favorite holiday. And it's pretty fair to say that it still isn't; however, every year it moves closer and closer towards the top! About 4 years ago, we were forced to find a new way to celebrate, to create a 'new' tradition for Halloween. So we did. And the traditions we knew in the past have been improved greatly to our delight! Our Halloween Party has become a favorite for our neighborhood friends and boosted our love of fun for everybody.
Typically, we invite neighbors over BEFORE trick-or-treating for a hot, healthy dinner. Everybody brings soups or chowders, we provide bread bowls and rolls and we finish it off with pumpkin pie. This year, our new ward activities committee put a glitch in our tradition by choosing to have the ward party from 3-5pm, a chili cook-off nonetheless. Our neighbors started to call and wondered what we should do. Dave and I talked about it and decided it was important to support the ward and decided to move our party to Friday night, since the kids would still be in costume from school that day.
Here are some pictures from our evening party, where over 65 people showed up!
Peace, love, and more love.....(Notice the blue on her cheek? Jaxson found my face paints and as people arrived a the party, he painted their faces. Poor Red Riding Hood!)
We had about 12 different soups, 2 casseroles, chips with homemade tomatilla salsa, bread bowls, home made root beer, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin chocolate chip cookes, pumpkin pies and it goes on and on!Some parts of Halloween are scarier than others! Here is our funny neighbor, Dana, in ALL OF THIS GLORY!
BOBBING FOR APPLES
This was too much fun! Seriously, it is a must-do every year now. Here is Jaxson, trying to lock his teeth into a red, juicy apple!
I want to add a note here: Two years ago in 2008, when I took their family picture, they had one child, Carter. Last year, in 2009, their family picture added another child, Clara. This year, 2010, they have 3 children. Meredith, if you put Nate up in an apartment for a year or two, we won't judge you one bit!
Dana and Yolanda's FamilyLittle Landon steals the show everywhere he goes! Cutest little skeleton ever!
PINATA FUN!
We also had a pinata for the kids.
One of our newer traditions is for the kids to go over to Grandma Barbie's house for brunch or lunch early on Halloween Day. This year, she invited the other grandkids to come too.
WARD PARTY AND TRICK-OR-TREATING
And finally it arrived........the ward chili cook-off and then off for candy!
We decided to go early so we wouldn't get cold, wet and rained on. As we got the kids out of the car, it started to drizzle. Withing 5 minutes, it was pouring! We loaded everybody up and took Dave and Alyssa home. We cut holes in garbage sacks and put them over the kids' Halloween outfits, coats and hats. Then the kids and I headed out again. While they dashed in and out of the heated van, I listened to Keith Urban and reflected on the marathon of events we had experience in 48 hours.
Halloween 2010 has come and gone. And for us, it exceeded our expectations in every way. Well, except for the rain. :)
