Winter Blues and White Snow

Okay, enough is enough.  January and February have done the Lindsays in this year!  We have had MCL sprains which have stopped all of our skiing time (besides no snow to ski on anyway), sickness right and left, but in the last 10 days, we have had the serious 2018 Flu.  Flu shots were only 20% effective this year.  It was the first year all of my children haven't gotten the shots and it won't happen again.  Austin became super sick and when he wasn't improving, we took him in.  We are glad we did because he had influenza and needed to have breathing treatments.  The next day, both Alyssa and Jaxson came home from school with fevers and sick.  Alyssa was in particularly bad.  She threw up for 3 days and had a fever.  Then Taylor.  And then there is their mother, who stayed up night after night holding and cuddling the fevered kids, having them cough in her face, giving breathing treatments every 3-4 hours.....she became a causality too!  In fact, as I am writing this post, I am doing so from my bed. I missed two days of school last week because I wasn't feeling well and taking care of my own kids but then it came and just hit me!  I was home again today because I haven't been able to get my fever under control.  So miserable!

.....and finally!  As Winter 2018 wraps up, we get our first huge snow storm!  It was a good one, measuring in at almost a foot on the benches this year!  Jaxson and Dave were awesome to go and shovel us out.

BYU Women's Basketball

One of the assistant coaches of the BYU women's basketball team has a child in Alyssa's class.  His wife sent extra tickets to a game. So I invited a few of Alyssa's friends to come with us to watch the Lady Cougars play ball.  It was so fun!  Cosmo paid us a lot of attention, the girls got to do the chicken dance during a time out, and I got to watch one of my former students, Sara Hamsen, play basketball. Such a wonderful day with my kids!

Happy 9th Birthday, sweet Alyssa!

A few days after the torn MCL, crutches, and then knee brace, Alyssa celebrated her 9th birthday!  She had been such a trooper with the lifestyle change of not getting around so quickly.  Dave had planned to take her out for lunch since I had to teach all morning.  Around lunch, I sent him a quick text asking him to send me some pictures of them out to lunch.  He called quickly---in agony---about how he forgot!  He exclaimed, "The only thing she asked for today on her birthday was to go out to lunch...and I forgot!"  So he called Deerfield to see if Alyssa had eaten lunch and she told him she hadn't because she wanted to be hungry when she went out with dad for lunch so he sped over to the school, calling for coverage on his noon patients, and took out his girl to Chick-fil-a!  He sent me these precious pictures!

After school, we picked up several of Alyssa's close friends and went bowling.  It was a blast!  Afterward, most of our Lindsay family came over to celebrate her birthday.  Happy Birthday, sweet Alyssa!  We can't imagine one single day without you in it.  May this year be your best adventure yet!

Yolanda's Birthday and a torn MCL an hour later

We celebrated Yolanda's birthday...well, some of us did.  Austin was at home finishing up some homework, Taylor was sick, Jaxson wasn't well, so it was just Dave, Alyssa, and I.  After 50 minutes, I went home, passed off on Austin's homework, and he begged me to run over to the DuJardins for 20 minutes.  Begrudgingly I let him go.  BIG MISTAKE!  About 30 minutes later, I called Dave to have the kids come home because it was a school night.  Dave said they needed to clean up and then they would come home.
Like pretty much always, I heard bawling when the kids came through the door.  Alyssa couldn't walk and Dave was mad.  She and Austin had been playing "football" while cleaning up.  He wrapped his arms around her feet, she fell one way and Austin fell the other.  She heard 3 pops in her knee.

The next day, Dave took her to the doctor's office where they sent her to get a MRI.  We learned she had a torn MCL and needed to meet with a specialist.  A few days later, we met with Dr. Madchen and learned that the tear was deep but Alyssa was lucky that it wasn't a complete tear.  He ordered physical therapy, no more sports etc for 6 weeks.  Our winter plans were immediately altered.  Another challenge to overcome!
